Omega 3’s for Your Cardiovascular Health

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. There are active steps we can take to avoid heart disease to try to fight off this epidemic. One step towards steering yourself away from heart disease is incorporating omega 3’s into your diet.

Omega 3 fatty acids help our heart by decreasing triglycerides, lowering blood pressure, reducing blood clotting, boosting immunity and improving joint health. Omega 3’s do all these things because they are unsaturated fatty acids that work to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is thought to damage your body and blood vessels in a way that ultimately lead to heart disease.

The problem is that most Americans do not get nearly the amount of omega 3’s that we need for our bodies. Our diets are shifted in such a way that we end up eating a lot of unhealthy fats instead of healthy fats.

To make a transition with our diet, the American Heart Association recommends that we eat fish twice a week in place of other meats to see health benefits from the Omega 3’s. You can also incorporate things like olive oil, peanuts, beans and dairy in place of unhealthy fats like red meats, fried foods and fast foods.

The Supplemental Story with Omega 3’s and Krill Oil

Making dietary shifts can often be easier suggested than executed. We can make small changes, but sometimes they still aren’t enough to get the amount of omega 3’s we need in a diet. That is when supplements become a viable option.

The problem is that not all omega 3 supplements are created equal. Regular omega 3 supplements will often not be properly absorbed by your body. Fish oil is by far inferior in absorption rate due to being an oil base. Krill oil with omega 3’s has been proven to be the one supplement that our bodies actually absorb a significant amount of omega 3’s from. The krill oil omega 3 content comes in a form that is water soluble, so our bodies have to do very little work to digest it.

The Benefits of Omega 3 Krill Oil

  • Due to the easy digestible form of krill oil it does not cause our body to have some of the unpleasant gaseous problems that fish oil is pretty infamous for causing. This is a huge benefit to anyone who has ever smelled or experienced burping up fish oil.
  • Unlike fish oil, Krill Oil is sustainably harvested. There is a board of scientists, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) that oversees the harvesting of krill oil. A tiny portion of the krill population is harvested for Krill Oil creation, so it has little to no impact on ecosystems.
  • Krill Oil contains the following anti-oxidants: astaxanthin, phosphotidylcholine, vitamin A and C. The addition antioxidants aren’t just an added health bonus in general, the antioxidants assist in preventing the omega 3’s from going rancid before being absorbed by the digestive system.
  • Krill Oil is better than fish oil. You can use a lot less to get the same effect. A study by Bunea R, El Farrah and Deutsch reported in the 2004 Alternative Medicine Review of examined the affects of krill oil, fish oil and a placebo on 120 people. The results supported what doctors had been assuming all along. Krill Oil takes the cake when it comes to lowering cholesterol.

The group of individual that added Krill Oil saw a 13% reduction in total cholesterol, 35% decrease in LDL, 43% increase in HDL and 11% reduction in triglyceride. The group taking fish oil had notable lesser results with 5.9% drop in cholesterol, 4.6% lower LDL, 4.2% raise in HDL and 3.2% reduction in triglycerides. The patient who took the placebo had a general increase in cholesterol, proving that taking fish oil or Krill Oil is better than doing nothing!

  •  A boost to your brain! Reducing consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is strongly associated with reduced risk of age related cognitive decline or dementia, things like Alzheimer’s disease, according to recent studies.
