What is the difference between fish oil and krill oil?

Krill oil may be a stronger, more effective way to get your daily omega-3s than fish oil. Krill oil is in phospholipid form, the type of lipid that our cell membranes are composed of. This allows for easy and immediate absorption into the body. Krill oil also contains astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant and carotenoid. Fish oil is generally in triglyceride form, which needs to then be converted to phospholipid form. Some of the beneficial qualities and strength of the fish oil may be diminished during this conversion. Krill oil may be the better alternative to fish oil if you are looking for maximum potency, efficacy and purity in your omega-3 supplement.

What are the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s)?

The two omega-3s that hold the key to krill oil’s health benefits are EPA and DHA.

EPA and DHA are shown in many studies to reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol, increase HDL “good” cholesterol, lower triglycerides, reduce inflammation, promote proper development of the brain in babies and children, reduce age-related cognitive decline, promote hormonal balance, reduce symptoms of PMS, reduce joint stiffness and pain and support skin health.

Can I break open the capsule and consume the krill oil?

It is not recommended that you break open the capsule as the capsule helps to reduce any fishy odor, taste or repeat.

Is there any fishy repeat, taste or fish burps with your krill oil?

Can krill oil be a good supplement for bodybuilding?

Yes, The omega-3s in krill oil support joint health, reduce joint pain and inflammation and can speed up recovery time. Athletes need more nutrients than non-athletes due to increased energy expenditure and oxidative damage. Omega-3s, like those found in krill oil, help to counter oxidative damage. Is krill oil good for dogs?

I am a vegetarian, can I take krill oil?

Viva Labs Krill Oil contains no animal products. It does contain fish and a fish (tilapia) gelatin capsule. If you are a pescatarian or are comfortable with small amounts of fish in your diet, you can take Viva Labs Krill Oil to supplement your vegetarian diet.

Is krill oil good for eye health?

Yes. Krill oil’s omega-3s can help to lubricate eyes, reducing dryness and irritation. Krill Oil also contains astaxanthin (a potent antioxidant and carotenoid) which can also support eye health.

The American Optometric Association states that DHA, an omega-3 found in krill oil, is found, “in the highest concentration in the retina, suggesting it has an important functional role.” They also state that various studies have indicated that deprivation or lack of DHA in the diet may lead to retinal degeneration and impaired vision.

What is krill? Is krill a fish?

Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans. They are extremely pure because they are at the bottom of the food chain. Their high omega-3 content comes from their phytoplankton diet, which is naturally high in EPA and DHA. Krill oil’s EPA and DHA are pre-converted and in the highly absorbable phospholipid form. Krill are sourced from the waters of the Antarctic, a pure and uncontaminated body of water. Krill are naturally high in astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant and carotenoid. Astaxanthin is what gives krill and krill oil its bright red/orange colour.

Are flaxseeds a good source of omega-3s?

Flaxseed and flaxseed oil contains the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), which our body poorly converts to EPA and DHA. Krill oil is rich in nutritionally-supportive EPA and DHA and is pre-converted, highly bio-available and active, allowing your body to fully access the spectrum of nutrients that it has to offer. In a healthy person, only 15% of ALA is converted to EPA and DHA. A diet high in omega-6 fatty acids, found in corn and safflower oils can drastically reduce the body’s ability to make EPA and DHA from ALA. What is DHA?

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that needs to be obtained from your diet, making it an essential fatty acid. DHA is required for brain and eye health. It is particularly important for children during their developmental years for proper brain and eye development. Krill oil is naturally high in DHA.
DHA can be used to help manage ADHD, depression, heart disease, brain development in babies and children, PMS, arthritis and more. Viva Labs Krill Oil contains 95 mg DHA per serving.

What is EPA?

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to have cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.

EPA is a natural component of krill oil and helps to lower inflammation, decrease high blood pressure, promote arterial health and overall cardiovascular wellness.

EPA can be used for joint inflammation/pain and arthritis management, depression, heart disease, ADHD and more.

Viva Labs Krill Oil contains 165 mg EPA per serving.

Are omega-3s good for heart health?

Yes. The omega-3s found in krill oil are clinically proven to be beneficial to heart health. Krill oil has been shown in multiple studies to lower LDL “bad” cholesterol. High levels of LDL “bad” cholesterol, puts you at a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. Krill oil has also been shown to be more effective at lowering LDL cholesterol than fish oil. Taking krill oil for overall cardiovascular and heart health can be an extremely effective preventative measure to reduce the risk of cardiac events.
A study that was published in the Alternative Medicine Review, found that krill oil significantly reduced not only total cholesterol, but LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The same study also found that krill oil worked to increase HDL “good” cholesterol levels. One to three grams of krill oil per day has the ability to reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol by 34% and increase HDL “good” cholesterol by 4.2%.

What are sources of omega-3s?

There are many sources of omega-3s from both plant and animal sources. These include: krill and krill oil, salmon and other fish, grass-fed beef, omega-3 eggs, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, non-GMO soy, pumpkin seeds, kale and squash.

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin comes from a unique microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis) which contains this valuable antioxidant and carotenoid. A study in the Journal of Medicinal Food, found astaxanthin to be a more powerful antioxidant than any other carotenoid and even vitamin E. The krill eat this microalgae, retaining the natural astaxanthin.

Is krill oil safe for all ages?

Krill oil is generally safe for all ages. Speak to your health care provider to see if krill oil is right for you. There may be exceptions or interactions with some medications that need to be considered before adding krill oil to your diet.

Can children take krill oil? How much can they take?

Yes. Krill oil can be extremely beneficial to children during their developmental years. The omega-3s in krill oil promote, brain, eye, joint and nervous system development. Omega-3s, like those found in krill oil can also help to reduce behavioral issues and regulate mood. A recent study in the journal, Nutrients, found DHA, an omega-3 found in krill oil, to have a favorable role in children’s cognition and behavior. Children can take 500 mg-1,250 mg of krill oil per day. Although generally safe, it is advised that you speak with your child’s health care provider before adding a krill oil supplement.

Is omega-3 safe for everybody?

Why do supplements have different levels of EPA & DHA?

EPA and DHA amounts are dependent on the manufacturing process. Many supplement companies use inferior methods of extraction, making their EPA and DHA amounts lower. Viva Labs Krill Oil has one of the highest levels of EPA and DHA in each serving.

Does krill oil contain iron?

Viva Labs Krill Oil does not contain iron. If you are looking to increase your iron consumption, eat whole foods higher in iron such as grass-fed beef, oysters, beans, whole grains, raisins and chia seeds. Never begin taking an iron supplement unless you have been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia and have been instructed to do so by your health care provider. Excess iron can lead to a variety of health problems.

When can you expect to feel results from the krill oil?

Some may feel results after a few days of taking krill oil. Changes in blood results can be seen after 1-3 months. Each person and condition is unique and responds to krill oil differently. For best results, couple Viva Labs Krill Oil with a healthy diet and moderate exercise.
