The heart is one of the most important organs in the body because it is in charge of pumping oxygen rich blood throughout the body. The oxygen rich blood carries and delivers vitamins and minerals to organs and other body sites that need them. Because the heart is responsible for pumping the blood to the brain, and the brain is the control center of the body, everyone needs to take put extra care into heart health.

One way individuals can control their heart’s health is to eat a healthy diet. According to recent studies, people should eat less saturated fat and trans fat, decrease sodium intake, and get more fiber. This means that we should all should stay away from fried foods, cookies, and cake, but make sure to eat low sodium or no salt added brands of food. Fiber can be found in fruits, whole grains, and vegetables; therefore, if we eat more of these foods, we will be able to take in more fiber. Eating a healthy diet helps controls heart health by reducing the cholesterol that is found in the body, therefore, lowering the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries. Plaque buildup could cause myocardial infractions because blood is trying to flow through these arteries and the plaque buildup is making it difficult to flow. At this point, the heart is working harder to pump the blood that is needed in the body. It could also cause stroke because the blood is not getting to the brain due to clogged arteries.

Another way people can keep their heart healthy is through exercise. Exercising can help individuals maintain weight, reduce high blood pressure, reduce arthritis pain, reduce risk for type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. By keeping the body at a healthy weight with the help of diet and exercise, an individual is reducing the risk of a lot of disease that is common with people who are unhealthy. It is recommended that individuals to work their way up to 150 minutes of moderate- intensity aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous- intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent mix of the two each week. By following this recommendation, an individual can main their weight. As long as a person stays a healthy weight, the person will have a healthy heart and thus keeps stave off problems associated with having an unhealthy heart.

Stopping the use of cigarettes is another way people can control their hearts health. Smoking cigarettes decreases oxygen to the heart increases the heart rate, and increase blood clotting. Because of the problems smoking cigarettes causes to the heart, there is also an increase in heart disease. Almost 20% of all deaths from heart disease in the United States are directly related to cigarettes smoking. Also smokers are have up to four times the higher chance of developing heart disease then non smokers. Because of the effects of smoking on the body, it is best if an individual did not smoke.

Having a healthy heart is important to all people because it is the difference between life and death. If an individual wants to live a healthy life while reducing the risks of obtaining heart disease, then they should make the necessary changes to protect their hearts. Some of the best ways to take care of a person’s heart is to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and stop smoking cigarettes. If people took the time to take care of their hearts, we as a country could lower our heart disease deaths, cancers, strokes and heart attacks.
