From Your Heart to Your Toes…
As a pre med and nutrition major at Arizona State University, I have learned the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise and benevolentchoices. I have read books and taken classes and learned the importance of balance in one’s life.
I am also a member of the United States Air Force and have learned the importance of structure and fitness, both here at home and in a deployed location.
According to the American Heart Association, there are ten ways to fight stress with health habits. One of them being to “slow down”. I learned this lesson during my very first deployment to the Middle East. My squadron was working extremely long days in very hot, stressful conditions and there were a lot changes that we were learning to adapt to. Personally, I was on that deployment to escape some of my own problems at home. One day in the desert, one of the doctors taught a stress management class. I attended the class and learned that slowing down is one of the healthiest things someone can do. In that class I learned the importance of breathing techniques as a part of stress management, as well as positive visualization. In order to complement those healthy behaviors, I was taught the importance of vitamins and minerals. I went back to my squadron, went online and ordered a bottle of Omega-3 fatty acids and a multivitamin. I also invited the doctor back to my squadron where I facilitated the same stress management class. My flight chief became so relaxed that he fell asleep in his chair!
So many of us do not take in the proper nutrients from the foods that we eat. So much of our food in this country is heavily processed and is void of the essential vitamins and minerals that our body cannot produce on its own. Supplementation is so important for anyone who wants their body to function at optimal levels. One of the most vital supplements that anyone can take is a heart healthy fatty acid, such as an Omega-3 supplement. This aids the heart in healthy blood flow and proper metabolism, allowing all other areas and organs in the body to function correctly.
I really learned the importance of supplementation when I began training for my first marathon. Aside from the demands that training provides, nutrition requirements are just as crucial to the success of an athlete. From promoting fluid between joints to allowing sufficient absorption of other vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acid became a part of my daily routine.
In the past few years of going to college, deploying and learning to create balance in my own life I have learned the importance of a holistic healthy lifestyle. Choices we make today will continue to impact us in the future. Holistic health involves every aspect of our life, from diet and exercise to stress management and balancing one’s goals and obligations, dreams and responsibilities. And our heart is the cornerstone of our health and welfare. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
