About Krill Oil

Can I break open the capsule and consume the krill oil?

It is not recommended that you break open the capsule as the capsule helps to reduce any fishy odor, taste or repeat. If you have trouble swallowing pills, you may choose to break open the capsule, however the taste and smell may be unpleasant.

Does Krill Oil contain heavy metals or toxins?

Krill are naturally very low in heavy metals or toxins as they are both low on the food chain, and reside in cold Antarctic waters.

Does krill oil contain iron?

Viva Naturals Krill Oil does not contain iron.

I am a vegetarian, can I take krill oil?

Krill Oil contains krill (a crustacean) and a fish (tilapia and basa) gelatin capsule. If you are comfortable with small amounts of seafood in your diet, you can take Viva Naturals Krill Oil to supplement your vegetarian diet.

Is krill oil kosher?

No. Krill is a crustacean and is not kosher.

Is krill oil safe for all ages?

Krill oil is generally safe for all adults. Speak to your healthcare provider to see if krill oil is right for you. There may be exceptions or interactions with some medications that need to be considered before adding krill oil to your diet.

What are the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids?

The omega-3’s that make krill oil beneficial are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA and DHA are shown in many studies to promote cardiovascular health, support feminine health, healthy joints, brain health and more.* Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly lacking in the diet which is why supplementation is often recommended.

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin comes from a unique microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis) and is a carotenoid with antioxidant properties.* A study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found astaxanthin to have more antioxidant activity than any other carotenoid, and even more than vitamin E.* The krill eat this microalgae, retaining the astaxanthin.

What is krill?

Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans sourced from the Antarctic Ocean. Their omega-3 content comes from their phytoplankton diet, which has EPA and DHA. The EPA and DHA in krill oil are pre-converted into their highly absorbable phospholipid form. Krill also contain astaxanthin, a naturally occuring carotenoid with antioxidant properties. Astaxanthin is what gives krill oil its bright red/orange color.

What is the extraction process of the krill oil?

Using responsible harvesting practices, krill are carefully collected from the pure waters of the Antarctic with minimal environmental impact. Our freshly-caught krill is then immediately processed on-board our ship to maximize freshness and preserve key nutrients in its natural form. This innovative technique involves minimal processing in low temperatures to decrease the risk of oxidation. The result of a fully traceable krill oil, distinctly dark red in color signifying exceptionally high levels of astaxanthin which works as an antioxidant and other key nutrients.*

Are the capsules enteric coated?

No. Our innovative Caplique® technology protect our krill oil against the effects of oxidation and help preserve its freshness. These capsules are easy to swallow.

Can I take krill oil with my multivitamin or other supplements?

Yes. The omega-3’s in krill oil are considered to be essential nutrients, but they do not interfere with other nutrients found in multivitamins. With this or any other form of supplementation, we always recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner.

How is the krill harvested?

How long will it take to see noticeable benefits?

As each individual is unique, results vary. Factors such as age, diet, physical activity level, gender, etc. all have an impact on the absorption of krill oil. We recommend taking krill oil for a minimum of three months to see noticeable benefits.

How many capsules are there per bottle?

There are 60 Caplique® capsules per bottle of Viva Naturals Krill Oil. This is a 30 day supply if you are taking the daily recommended serving (2 Caplique(R) Capsules).

How much krill oil is safe to take in one day?

The recommended dosage of Viva Naturals Krill Oil is 2 Caplique(R) Capsules. Speak to your healthcare practitioner if you would like to supplement beyond this serving.

How should I store my krill oil?

Viva Naturals Krill Oil should be stored in a cool, dry place protected from heat and light. No refrigeration is required, nor is it recommended.

Is there any fishy repeat/burp, taste or smell with your krill oil?

No, there is no fishy repeat or fish burps with Viva Naturals Krill Oil. Our krill oil is encapsulated in Caplique® capsules to limit the incidence of oxidation that may lead to unpleasant taste or odor.

Is Viva Naturals Krill Oil FDA certified?

Our krill oil is made in GMP-certified (Good Manufacturing Practices) facilities. The FDA does not certify dietary supplements.

Is Viva Naturals Krill Oil in Ethyl-Ester or Triglyceride form?

Neither. Viva Naturals Krill Oil is delivered in a more bioavailable phospholipid form.

Is your krill oil free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

Yes. Viva Naturals Krill Oil is a non-GMO product.

What are the capsules made from?

Caplique® capsules are made from fish gelatin (tilapia and basa).

What is the best time of day to take krill oil?

Krill oil can be taken at any time of day. To reduce any risk of digestive upset, take krill oil with a full meal.

What is the DHA and EPA content of your krill oil?

Viva Naturals Krill Oil delivers 90 mg DHA and 165 mg of EPA per serving. This is in the highly absorbable phospholipid form.

What type of gelatin is used in your krill oil capsules?

Our capsules are composed of tilapia and basa gelatin, and every batch is tested for impurities.

Medication Side Effects and Allergy Questions

Are there any medical conditions in which I shouldn’t take krill oil?

Can I take krill oil along with my other blood pressure medication?

As with any form of supplementation, it is advisable to speak with your health care practitioner before adding krill oil to your supplement regimen.

Can I take krill oil if I have a seafood or shellfish allergy?

No. It is advisable that you do not take krill oil if you have a seafood or shellfish allergy. Our product contains both fish (tilapia and basa) gelatin in our capsule and shellfish (krill).

Can I take krill oil while I am pregnant / breastfeeding?

While it is generally safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women to take krill oil, it is advised that you speak with your doctor before doing so.

Can I take krill oil while I’m on aspirin/ecotrin?

We recommend consulting your healthcare practitioner before taking krill oil or any other supplement.

Can I take krill oil with magnesium?

While there are no known interactions between krill oil and magnesium, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider prior to use.

Can krill oil be taken before or after surgery?

Krill oil is not intended to replace medication before or after surgery. However due to its positive benefits on overall health, including promoting a healthy lipid profile, supporting joint function, and promoting cardiovascular health, krill oil is a safe and effective everyday supplement.* We recommend consulting your healthcare practitioner before taking this or any other supplement.

Can krill oil be taken to support brain health?

Omega-3’s such as EPA and DHA, two essential fatty acids found in krill oil, have been shown to support brain and cardiovascular health.* The primary differences between fish oil and krill oil are the structure to which the omega-3’s are bound, which significantly impacts how the omega-3’s are utilized by the body. The omega-3’s in krill oil are bound to phospholipids, which comprise the identical structure of human cell walls. This allows them to be easily recognized by the body.

Can krill oil cause constipation?

Krill oil is not known to cause constipation. If you are experiencing severe or chronic constipation, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider.

Can krill oil cause gout or kidney stones?

Seafood, shellfish, meat and some vegetables are naturally high in purines, which promotes a buildup of uric acid. This buildup may lead to gout or kidney stones. Krill oil is processed, leaving behind purines, and should not cause problems in most people. Those who have a history of gout or kidney problems should consult their health care practitioner before adding a krill oil supplement.

Can krill oil help support my joints?

Krill oil has EPA and DHA, two omega-3’s that help support healthy joint function and mobility.* The essential fatty acids in krill oil also help.* A recent study, published in the journal of Current Pharmaceutical Design, found marine-based omega-3 fatty acids, like those from krill oil, significantly helped to promote joint health.* Taking a krill oil supplement is an easy and effective way support overall joint health.*.

Does krill oil cause heartburn?

Krill oil may cause digestive distress or upset in some people. If you suffer from heartburn, try taking your krill oil with a meal to help lower the risk of digestive upset.

Does krill oil have an impact on sleep?

Some individuals may experience sleep-related side effects from krill oil. Before taking this or any other supplement, we recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner.

Does krill oil support a healthy immunological response?

Omega-3’s support eicosanoids, which help to maintain a healthy immunological response.* The omega-3’s found in krill oil may support joint health, cardiovascular health and immune system function.*

Does krill oil support PMS symptoms?

Yes. Krill oil has been clinically shown to support the discomfort felt with cramps & mood changes associated with mild PMS*.

I take Lipitor®. Do I still need a krill oil supplement?

As with any form of supplementation, it is advisable to speak with your healthcare practitioner before adding krill oil to your daily regimen.

Is a prescription needed?

There is no prescription needed for krill oil. It is completely safe to use as a supplement. However if you are taking any medication, have any preexisting health conditions, or are pregnant or nursing, we recommend you consult with your healthcare practitioner before use.

Is krill oil safe for cancer patients?

As with any form of supplementation, it is advisable to speak with your healthcare practitioner before adding krill oil to your daily regimen.

Is krill oil safe for diabetics?

Yes. Krill oil is generally safe for diabetics. Individuals with diabetes often have increased levels of fatty acids in their bloodstream because of the liver’s inability to properly break down macronutrients.
Krill oil may actually support liver health by providing easily absorbed, metabolized and health-promoting omega-3’s for the liver to process.* Being in the phospholipid form makes krill oil one of the easiest to digest and absorb omega-3’s available.
However, with this or any other form of supplementation, we always recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner.

Will krill oil cause upset stomach?

Krill oil is not known to cause upset stomach. If you have any concerns of upset stomach you may want to try taking your krill with a full meal and if you find this to be a reoccurring issue, we recommend you speak with your healthcare practitioner.
