    Krill oil FAQs

    Where are krill found?

Krill exist in every ocean around the globe, representing the largest biomass on Earth.  Antarctic krill,  the common krill used for supplements, are sourced from the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica.

Krill is harvested from the wild, and because of its very specific diet of Antarctic algae, can’t be farmed or raised.

Is krill oil safe for pregnant or nursing women?

A sufficient intake of the key nutrients of krill oil (EPA, DHA, choline) is important at all stages of life including pregnancy. However, it’s recommended that women in any of these situations discuss the use of krill oil as well as any other supplements with their GP as it is essential that use of supplements is considered in light of each women’s total intake dietary intake.

Omega-3s are important for the developing child, so the intake requirements for a pregnant woman is increased. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set a recommended intake for EPA and DHA in the format of ‘adequate intake’ (AI). The AI for the general adult population is 250mg of EPA and DHA. For pregnant or lactating women, an additional 100-200mg of DHA is advised. US authorities have not established daily recommended intake levels for omega-3s.

There is no reason to be more restrictive with krill oil than with advice on seafood in general, but its recommend that consumers belonging to vulnerable population subgroups (pregnant, nursing, children, people suffering from chronic disease) consult their doctor before using supplements.

Can I use krill oil long term?

Yes. The omega-3 index does not increase over night and krill oil supplements are intended for everyday use. Supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet, but a good way to ensure optimal total intake of key nutrients (EPA, DHA, choline). Most of the human clinical studies are done over several months to tract omega-3 index improvement.

Do the capsules lose potency over time?

No, quality throughout shelf life is obtained if the supplement is stored at room temperature and protected from sunlight. The shelf life of packed capsules is 2 years.

Is krill oil meant to be taken before meals on an empty stomach or with food?

It is not necessary to take with food. The phospholipids of krill oil easily emulsify in the stomach and absorption is good either on an empty stomach or when taken with food.

    Can pets take krill oil?

Yes, pets can generally take krill oil, as it provides benefits similar to those seen in humans, particularly for heart, brain, and joint health. The essential omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) found in krill oil support inflammation reduction, joint health, and skin and coat condition in pets. Additionally, the presence of phospholipids aids in better absorption of these fatty acids, making krill oil potentially more efficient than fish oil for animals.

However, it's essential to consult a veterinarian before giving krill oil to pets to ensure the proper dosage and confirm that it is suitable for their specific health conditions. Also, as with humans, pets with shellfish allergies should avoid krill oil.

How much krill oil should I give my pet?

The recommended dosage of krill oil for pets depends on their weight and specific health needs. A general guideline is:

    • Small pets (under 25 lbs): 250 mg of krill oil per day
    • Medium pets (25-50 lbs): 500 mg of krill oil per day
    • Large pets (over 50 lbs): 1000 mg of krill oil per day

It's essential to consult with a veterinarian to determine the exact dosage based on your pet's health condition and needs, as they may adjust the amount depending on specific factors like joint health, skin condition, or inflammation.

However, it’s important to consult with a pediatrician before starting any supplement to ensure the appropriate dosage based on the child’s age and specific health needs. Krill oil can be particularly beneficial for children who may not get enough omega-3s through their diet, especially if they don't eat fish regularly. Always follow a healthcare provider’s guidance when introducing supplements to children.

Before adding any supplement to your routine, including krill oil, we recommend chatting with your healthcare provider—especially if you have any existing health conditions, take medications or have any existing health conditions, are pregnant/nursing, or take any medications. Supplements are not meant to substitute a healthy diet and exercise. Krill oil contains crustaceans.
